4:30 AM. No one should be awake at 4:30 AM. But here I was getting out of bed before the birds wake up. I met up with two friends who were up to the task and who forged their way through slumber and morning cold (and brrr was it cold!). The thing about pipe smoking, is that a pipe is very much a functional piece of art: one with plenty of historical and fictional associations. They are great conversation pieces too, and the pipe smoker is the one who enjoys the subtleties of the journey rather than the satisfaction of arriving at the end of the book in any hurry. Images of the crime-cracking Sherlock Holmes, Huck Finn, and 'Ol Caption Ahab come to mind as prominent pipe smokers.
