Years ago a friend and I were having a discussion over lunch about life when he had asked me what I wanted most out of it. That struck me as a particularly challenging question, straightforward as it was. After giving it some thought, I told him that I simply wanted to be happy. He responded in a surprising way by telling me that me that the people whom he knows who have had happiness as their prime goal have actually been the most unhappy people that he knows of. I’ve been perplexed by this statement for years until I realized something critical.
